Crispy Melts are a medically tailored transitional food that fits all IDDSI solid texture levels. As a transitional food that dissolves from a regular solid to puree, it can be added to complement IDDSI levels: puree, minced and moist, soft and bite sized and easy to chew regular.
There are 3 main locations for Crispy Melts in facilities. #1 Store in the therapy room and take bedside or to radiology for MBSS. Use in therapy sessions, food trials or during consultation. #2 Have available in floor stock or nourishment room for identified patients to consume as a snack or with a meal. #3 Add to a meal tray and allow to continue to graze after tray is removed.
Here are some rules of thumb: Tear along the notch above the resealable zipper. If you aren't offering all Crispy Melts in one sitting, dispense what you need into a bowl or cup. Reseal by closing the zipper with finger pressure. Mark the date opened on the outside of the bag. Store in the pantry for up to 1 month.

In a bag of Cripsy Melts there are approximately 2 heaping handfuls of pieces. The pieces are handmade and the size varies. The adult Crispy Melts are about the size of a silver dollar and the kids version is the size of a dime.
This depends on your goal and your patient's status. SLPs make recommendation for Crispy Melts in the chart with frequency of use and time of day to deliver. If used as an oral exercise to progress the diet, 1/4 to a full bag can be consumed with meals or am/pm snack. The quantity depends on their status. For best results in progressing the diet, a patient should eat daily. Dietitians can also add a bag to the meal tray daily, as a novel texture for IDDSI diets 4, 5, 6, or EC7.
